Woodworking Projects Made Easy

A lot of things were different when your grandparents were young. Woodworking was very popular back then and most men had the skills to build something with their own hands. Almost everyone had their own woodworking projects which they worked with whenever they had some time to spare.

Things look a lot different today. Few people can handle their own woodworking projects and most people has to call in a professional if they would like to have some nice wooden furniture for the home. Furniture made of wood are stylish and classic and loved by most people but it would definitely be a lot easier if everyone could create their own furniture.

Woodworking is easier today

Its actually quite easy to gain knowledge today and woodworking knowledge is not an exception. The net is a great source where you can learn a lot about woodworking and how to start with easy woodworking projects. You will have to practice what you read in order to become skillful obviously but that will be a lot of fun.

Buy what you need to start

In order to start woodworking you will need some tools. Its always best to buy as good tools as possible since that will make it possible to get real accurate results. It all depends on how much money you can spare though and you should always stick to your budget since woodworking is supposed to be fun, not supposed to ruin you.

Internet is great since you will be able to buy all the tools you might need there. The prices are usually much lower than in the stores you will be able to find if youre out shopping on the street. Make a list of all the tools you will need for your woodworking projects and order them from the best e-shop you can find. Remember to compare prices before you order anything since some web shops are a lot cheaper than other ones.

It can be difficult for a beginner to know exactly what tools you will need to start with but you will be able to find guidance if you read online articles. The first thing you should buy is a great saw. Actually you will need several saws since there are various types, needed for various moments. You will also need a good jig.

Go ahead and learn all you want and need about woodworking. You will soon be able to work on your own woodworking projects and you will soon discover how fun it is.

Turn It Dont Burn It

This bark covered vase came directly from the firewood pile. As I stack my firewood for the winter I try to keep an eye out for interesting pieces that I can save from the stove. These vases are truly one of a kind, each one as individual as the tree it came from. This one is made from Beech which tends to grow unevenly and burly in this part of the world.

This flower box with the white pumpkins is my favorite. I could not decide this year if I wanted to do traditional orange pumpkins or white pumpkins for my own halloween displays...it caused me a lot of anguish (unfortunately, this is often the types of issues that occupy my thoughts). In the end, I decided to use orange. Definitely, next year I go with the white.

Geoff’s Cutting Board Glueup Jig

From: Geoff

Location: Calgary, Alberta, Canada

Hobbyist or Pro: Hobbyist

Experience: 0-2 yrs

Project Name: Cutting board lamination jig

Wood Species: Baltic birch 3/4 ply and hard maple

Project Description:
I made a very simple gluing jig for cutting board strip lamination. Basically a 20×30 inch piece of Baltic birch ply with a lot of grooves routed in for glue squeeze out and a back fence and side fence. You have no problems with clamping up the board pieces. They do not move around or slide out of alignment either vertical or horizontal. With the two rails you get a 90 corner and quick clamp ups.

Length wise is for edge grain glue up and short side is for the end grain glue ups. Although either would work depending on board dimensions. I have an easy time clamping up numerous pieces in this jig. I experience no troubles with squareness of the cutting board strips, no vertical movement with clamps in place and time to work prior to glue setting up. The end result is a very nice lamination that is square and mostly flat. A few passes through the sander or planer as it is still edge/face grain. Then you know the flips and turns for end grain and finally a few passes through the drum sander and it’s finished.

Table saw outfeed support

For several years Ive been saving a bunch of rollers a neighbor gave to me. Since my new table saw is higher than my old one, I decided to make some outfeed supports that will sit on my workbench at the same height as the saw. Im happy with this simple solution. I can arrange the rollers around however I might need them, and the stands are easy to store.

Its a short video, but I really wanted to make these because I am going to start building my new router table this weekend. Its crazy how many different designs Ive sketched up, tossed out, then gone back to. Ill be letting you know more about it as the week goes on.

Blanket Chest Book Scores a Home Run with Industry Blog

How to Build an Heirloom-Worthy Blanket Chest
Everything you need to know packed in one solid book.

For those of you in search of a bit of project inspiration, fine woodworking contributing author Peter Turners latest book, Blanket Chests, was recently reviewed by Cabinet & Furniture Trends & Information. This collection of 30 blanket chests includes plenty of techniques as well as design and construction details for each of the pieces highlighted. Styles range from traditional to contemporary and the book is chock full of great ideas!

That Happy Few
Reprinted from Cabinet & Furniture Trends & Information

Some people call them blanket chests because they store blankets in them. Some people call them Hope Chests and give them to young ladies still in high school to fill with objects and dreams for their someday wedding. Ive also heard of woodworkers who have made some of the most intricate chests imaginable on the occasion of their own daughters weddings, a few of which were actually started while the young lady was in middle school. They can be plain or carved or elaborate, but the one element that seems to connect them all is love. Love of the recipient sometimes, love of the craft always.

One of the things those of us who have reached a certain age like to do is to make gifts for loved ones. Over the years I have made a number of college graduates very happy by cutting my own mats and then framing their diplomas with frames I designed and made myself. Another wonderful gift, for those of us who have children or grandchildren, is the blanket chest Ive described at some length.

Woodworking is an art, a skill, a passion, that most of all, a passion, because it is passion that drives a person to learn all that is required to truly be considered a master in this field. One of the things that most amazes me about woodworking, though, is the amount of skill that can be obtained by anyone willing to simply put forth a consistent effort and seek out those who know. In woodworking, as it is with anything, really, there are a handful of people at the top who do things that cause the rest of us to just shake our heads, knowing full well that we are never in this world going to be able to do something like that. But sometimes that happy few takes the time to write down their secrets in a book for the rest of us, and that, in turn, brings us to the subject of todays blog.

Taunton Press has recently published a book by Scott Gibson & Peter Turner entitled "Blanket Chests" which presents outstanding designs from thirty of the worlds finest furniture makers. It was brought to my attention by one of the featured artisans, Craig Thibodeau. As a matter of fact, Craigs Dogwood Blanket Chest was one of those featured on the cover of the book!

Craigs a local woodworker whose work I first encountered when Joe Dusel and I started this blog site in February, 2008. It was during my first panicky search for something to write about, and Joe suggested a guy he knew who did wonderful work with marquetry, and that began what is becoming a beautiful friendship. This time Craig is one of thirty, and the thirty themselves are part of something larger, the book itself.

Speaking of the other woodworkers featured throughout, I should take a moment and identify the work in the accompanying pictures. I have already identified Craig Thibodeau as the maker of the Dogwood Blanket Chest. The chest in the round was made by Gregory Smith, and the Arts and Crafts chest was made by Darrell Peart.

The guy with the beard is Peter Turner, and hes the one who takes us through the beginning part of the book, which is a short, but detailed how-to-do-it on the various joinery techniques that are employed in blanket chest making, then gets into the chests themselves. There is a wide range of chests, ranging from the fairly simple to those that would challenge almost any woodworker. A number of the woodworkers, including Craig, have taken the time to write a little about the methods used to construct their chests. But the book has a generous number of pictures and drawings throughout, enough to enable woodworkers to make most of the items featured. And for those that are a bit beyond our skill level, well, thats what practice is all about. Who knows, perhaps well join that happy few!

Guest Bathroom Project Inspiration

Howdy!  Hubby came home the other day with a couple of vintage music magazines and I LOVE them.  Everyone in our family is a huge music fan so these were pretty special.
Check out the date......1936 and 37!  How cool is that?   And they are full of all kinds of wonderful vintage ads.
 And sheet music, of course.
I thought they were so interesting and unique but I wasnt quite sure what I wanted to do with them, until I saw this.
Pottery Barn
We have a guest bathroom off of our kitchen in the laundry room that is very neglected as far as decorating goes.  I saw this pic in my recent issue of Pottery Barn and was instantly inspired to do my own version with the pages from these beautiful vintage music magazines and since its a tiny bathroom, they will work perfectly.  Ive got some really neat things in mind and Im excited to give our overlooked guest bathroom a little TLC.  Oh, I love a project!

Have a great day!

A New Member Of Our Family

Several months ago, a sweet little cat showed up on our doorstep and we were all completely smitten with her.  I blogged about her here.  But after about a month, she just disappeared.  We looked for her and posted flyers with the help of our neighbors but we never could find her, which left us all sad.  But I realized that for the short while that she was with us, we realized that we were ready for a pet.

My older boys have ALWAYS wanted a dog from the time they were small.  Especially our oldest.  But with kids with allergies and asthma, having pets has been something we couldnt do for most of their childhood.  However, as theyve grown older, they have outgrown their pet dander allergies and Ive been thinking that maybe it was time.  I grew up with a dog that I adored and I wanted them to have that same experience.

Occasionally, I would look through our local animal shelter for just the right dog, but the dog they had in mind was never there....until this past week.

Meet Andy....

We rescued him from our local animal shelter and it couldnt have been better timing.

Im one of those types of people that tries to find a meaning and purpose behind everything.  Sometimes thats a good thing, sometimes its not.  Most of the time, I choose to believe its a positive thing.

When our oldest was only 3 years old (hes 20 now), his very favorite movie was Toy Story.  He absolutely loved Woody and Buzz.  We took him to the see the movie in the theater and he was so thrilled.  A big smile planted on his sweet face through the entire movie.  Then for Christmas that year, "Santa" brought him the Woody and Buzz Lightyear characters from the movie.  He loved them so.

But his favorite part?

The "Andy" that was written on the bottom of Woodys boots.  He thought it was the coolest thing ever.

After all these years, we still have his Woody and Buzz Lightyear toys.

Its funny, at 3 and 4 years old, he went around writing "Andy" on several of his other toys, instead of his own name.  Its a funny, special memory that my hubby and I love to remember.

So, when I was looking at all the sweet animals at the animal shelter and came across a beautiful dog named "Andy", who was also the breed our son had always wanted, I just couldnt say no.

So, in a spur of the moment decision, we adopted him.

It was something our son needed and knowing how happy it made him,
made me happy, too. :)

Wishing you all a Happy Thanksgiving with your families!!
